What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. Acupuncture provides a safe and effective way to encourage the natural healing.
Channels of energy (Qi), run through the body and over its surface in regular patterns, connecting all of our major organs. Illnesses arise when the cyclical flow of Qi in the meridians becomes unbalanced.
Acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions and reestablish the regular flow of energy through the meridians. By doing so, the symptoms resulting from the imbalance are removed.
This is the classical, Eastern explanation of how acupuncture works. Western medicine adds scientific explanation: acupuncture works by releasing certain chemicals (endorphins) that reduce pain, affect pain perception and mood, and regulate the endocrine and immune system.
Understanding Yin-Yang and Qi
Yin and Yang
These are interdependent, harmonious forces that ensure a dynamic balance of all things in life. Examples include day and night, male and female, and hot and cold. Disease occurs when there is an imbalance of these two forces.
Qi is the universal force, the basic energy that makes up the world. Inside the body, Qi is the life energy that sustains our body.
Qi travels through channels, called meridians in our body. There are 12 major meridians that circulate blood, Qi and other substances. Each meridian connects to one of the 12 organs of the human body, and are named after them. Qi travels from each meridian, passing through all 12 every 24 hours.
